Is the forward deployed engineer role a residency or a job that burns people out?

THE SHORT ANSWER

You can tell from one line on the handoff page. A residency ends with a handover, and in The FDE Transition the handover is a keys line: a named person at the customer who can change the configuration without calling the engineer. Blank at day 60, the deployment has not landed and the engineer is the permanent glue Miku Jha at ServiceNow warned about. Milos Mandic's State of FDE 2026 survey (FDE Hub, October 27, 2026) closed with 24 responses, published no percentages, and ended on exactly this question. Seven of his 24 said the systems they build stay with them after handover, and twelve spend more than a tenth of their week keeping delivered systems running. That is the keys line blank, which is glue, not a residency. The fix is a product decision: generalization rate and the keys line are two of the four FDE scorecard columns, and three of his 24 report into product.
