Reddit fell 29% and will wall the page behind a login. Notion's top channel is an AI tool at 25.4%. The assistant sends people to the page it can read.

Two numbers moved this week on the same change, in opposite directions, and Rich Holmes reported both. This is a field note on the referrer, which has moved, and on the page it sends people to.

The short version

Per Rich Holmes at Department of Product, Reddit's stock fell 29% on Friday, its worst day since the IPO, after it missed revenue; its CEO said Google traffic declined meaningfully and that AI Mode does not drive traffic, and Reddit will require login to view content, with 59% of daily actives not logged in and logged-in users making up 80% of monetized users. The same week Alphabet's Philipp Schindler pointed to lower monetization in AI Mode, per Latent Space. One issue later Holmes reports Akshay Kothari's survey at Notion: the top answer to how did you hear about us is an AI tool, at 25.4% of responses, with Granola's AI-attributed activations up 4,600% since January and Vercel's ChatGPT-referred signups up 10x. The referrer moved from the results page to the assistant, and the assistant sends people to the page it can read. Reddit walled the page and sells the corpus; Notion made the page the recommendation. falkster.com made the Notion choice in September: markdown at every URL, llms.txt, agents.md, and 331 answer pages that each name a company and a number. And every Monday my scan reads 73 sources by one request each and 21 walled sources by hand, which is what Reddit's wall looks like from the assistant's side. A login wall protects the licence and forfeits the referral, and the referral is the channel now.

The two numbers

Reddit first, from Holmes's November 1 issue. The stock fell 29% on Friday, its worst day since the IPO, after the company missed revenue targets. The CEO said Google traffic declined meaningfully, and that AI Mode does not drive traffic. The response has two parts: an algorithmic For You page, and a requirement to log in to view content in the coming months. The numbers behind the second part: 59% of Reddit's daily active users are not logged in, and logged-in users make up 80% of monetized users, who are worth more to advertisers. Holmes adds the third reason, which is that Reddit licenses its user-generated data to AI companies and a login wall protects that corpus. Other outlets put the drop at about 30%; I am using Holmes's figure throughout.

Google's side is in Latent Space's AINews of October 31. Alphabet's chief business officer Philipp Schindler pointed to the lower monetization the company was seeing in AI Mode, alongside strong growth in AI Mode queries. The newsletter notes that Google does not break out AI Mode in enough detail for rigorous analysis, and its headline figures are not explained in the body, so they are not here.

Notion second, from Holmes's November 2 issue. Co-founder Akshay Kothari shared the results of a survey asking how did you hear about Notion, and the top answer was an AI tool. ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI tools make up 25.4% of responses, and his phrase for the shift was gradually, then suddenly. The same issue has Granola's monthly activated users attributed to AI discovery up 4,600% since January 2026, and Vercel's share of signups referred by ChatGPT up 10x. The twenty-plus case studies behind the paywall I have not read and do not claim.

The referrer moved

Put the two side by side and they are one story. The referrer used to be the results page, and the results page sent a click to whoever ranked. The referrer is now the assistant, and the assistant sends a person to the page it can read, quote, and recommend. Reddit is losing the first kind of referral and Notion is gaining the second kind, and the same product, AI Mode or ChatGPT or Claude, is the cause of both.

The two companies then made opposite choices about the page.

Reddit chose the licence. A login wall keeps the reader out, keeps the corpus for the companies that pay for it, and raises the share of monetized users. It also makes the page unreadable to the assistant on the next visit, which means the assistant quotes the licensed copy and sends nobody.

Notion chose the referral. Its pages are what the assistant reads when a person asks what to use for notes, and the assistant sends the person to the page. The 25.4% is the click Reddit just gave up.

Only one of those choices gets the referral, and the referral is the channel.

What I did about it in September

I made the Notion choice for falkster.com before I had this week's numbers to justify it. In Personal Agents Will Call Every Few Hours. Kill the Front Door. the site's own version is spelled out: markdown at every URL, so an agent fetching a post gets the record and not the chrome, plus llms.txt and agents.md. The content rule came earlier, on 2026-09-14: no generic explainers, because the answers that earn clicks name a company and a number. There are 331 answer pages on the site now, and each one does.

Writing for Machines Is the New Writing for Executives has the reason the format matters: answer engines reward extractable, entity-rich blocks, and the only test of the writing is the cold read, where a model with no context gets the artifact and you measure the gap. A page that passes the cold read is a page the assistant can recommend.

I also live on the other side of Reddit's wall, every Monday. My creator scan reads 94 sources. For 73 of them the script makes one request and gets the post. The 21 that publish only on LinkedIn or behind a signup form get read by hand, two at a time, in a browser, because the wall is up. Those 21 get quoted less on this site. Not because they write less, and not because I read them less carefully, but because the wall adds a cost to every read, and a scan that runs every week pays it every week. That is what Reddit's login wall looks like from the assistant's side, at the scale of one site.

The citation churns, so the page is read every day

Holmes also reports Ahrefs tracking about 37,500 AI citations over 20 days. At least half were gone by day two, from 50% on AI Overviews to 83% on Copilot, and about 75% of the dropped citations came back later.

That number is the one that makes the wall expensive. A citation is not a ranking earned once. The assistant re-reads the page, and a page that is readable on every visit keeps being recommended, while a page that was readable once and walled afterwards gets quoted from the licensed copy and never sent a visitor. Reddit's licence sells the corpus as of the day it was copied. The referral needs the page as of today.

The field note

A login wall protects the licence and forfeits the referral. The referral is the channel now, at 25.4% of Notion's new users and 10x of Vercel's ChatGPT signups, and the page it rewards is the one that is readable to the agent on every visit, with the specific claim and the number on it.

Under AI Business Models the claim is that software priced against a labor cost that AI removes has to move its price to the outcome. The distribution version is the same: a page priced against a results-page click that AI removes has to move to the assistant's referral, and the assistant pays in clicks only for pages it can read.

This week, for the page you care about most: fetch it the way an agent would, with no session, and see what comes back. If it is a login form, you have chosen the licence, and the week's number for that choice is Reddit's. If it is the record, with the claim and the number, you have chosen the referral, and the number is Notion's.

What is the Notion number?+

Per Holmes's November 2, 2026 issue, Notion co-founder Akshay Kothari shared survey results on X for the question how did you hear about Notion, and the top answer was an AI tool, with ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI tools at 25.4% of responses. The same issue reports Granola's monthly activated users attributed to AI discovery up 4,600% since January 2026 and Vercel's share of signups referred by ChatGPT up 10x. The twenty-plus case studies behind the paywall are not claimed here.

What did Google say about AI Mode?+

Latent Space's AINews of October 31, 2026 reports Alphabet's chief business officer Philipp Schindler pointing to the lower monetization the company was seeing in AI Mode, alongside strong growth in AI Mode queries, and notes that Google does not break out AI Mode in enough detail for rigorous analysis. The headline's 15% and $500B figures are not explained in the body and are not used here.

What has falkster.com done about this?+

Since September the site serves markdown at every URL, publishes llms.txt and agents.md, and carries 331 answer pages that each name a company and a number, because the standing decision of 2026-09-14 was that those are the answers an assistant quotes and generic explainers are not. The other side of the same wall shows up in my Monday creator scan: 73 of its 94 sources are read by one request each, and the 21 that publish only on LinkedIn or behind a signup form are read by hand, two at a time, because the wall is up.

Why does the Ahrefs citation churn matter?+

Holmes reports Ahrefs tracking about 37,500 AI citations over 20 days: at least half were gone by day two, from 50% on AI Overviews to 83% on Copilot, and about 75% of the dropped citations returned. A citation is not a ranking you earn once. The assistant re-reads the page, and a page that is readable on every visit keeps being recommended while a page behind a wall gets quoted from the licensed copy and never sent traffic.

What is the decision rule for the page?+

Decide what the page is for: the reader, the assistant, or the licence. A login wall serves the licence and the logged-in ad revenue and forfeits the referral. A page the assistant can read on every visit, with the specific claim and the number on it, serves the referral, which is now the channel. The two are not compatible on the same URL, which is why the week's two numbers moved in opposite directions on the same change.
